Somaliland's House of Elders (Guurti) approved a 27-month extension of parliamentary and local council terms on April 28, 2026, postponing elections originally slated for May 2026 to March 2027, driving trader consensus to price "No election before 2027" at 82.5% amid concerns over repeated delays eroding democratic credibility. Opposition Waddani leads party odds at 22.4%, reflecting its strong showing in the 2024 presidential race where its candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Irro prevailed over ruling Kulmiye's Muse Bihi Abdi, while Kulmiye trails at 14.2% and UCID at 5.2%. Critics warn of political friction and institutional challenges, with President Irro's prior pledges for timely polls now tested; any reversal would require swift legal or executive action before year-end.
