He faces 20-year-old Spaniard Martin Landaluce (No. 94), a lucky loser into the main draw after Valentin Vacherot's withdrawal, who skipped the opener despite a 0-4 clay skid over the past month including qualifying losses in Madrid and Aix-en-Provence. Cilic leads their head-to-head 1-0 from a tight 2025 Nottingham Challenger semifinal on grass; this marks their clay debut amid Cilic's experience edge, Landaluce's baseline speed, and mild Rome weather with no injury concerns.
