The Washington Nationals, sitting at 31-32 and third in the NL East, opened their three-game series at Chase Field with a dominant 14-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 5. The D-backs enter at 33-29, second in the NL West, but face multiple roster challenges including 10-day IL stints for Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (hamstring) and James McCann (quadricep), plus recent setbacks for key arms. Nationals starters also carry notable absences with Jake Irvin on the 15-day IL (shoulder) and others on longer-term lists, shaping bullpen usage and rotation decisions for the remaining games in Phoenix. Hot weather conditions around 104°F add another variable to pitching effectiveness and bullpen management in this interleague matchup.
