Sergey Fomin enters the Shymkent 2 Challenger on clay with strong momentum after defending his title at Shymkent 1 last week, defeating Timofey Skatov 6-3, 7-5 in the final for his second Challenger crown. The No. 359-ranked Uzbek boasts a 58% career clay win rate and regional familiarity in Kazakhstan. Jelle Sels, ranked No. 447, reached the Shymkent 1 quarterfinals by upsetting Ivan Gakhov before a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Antoine Ghibaudo, showing solid form on the surface where he holds a 56% lifetime record. This first-round (1/16-final) marks their head-to-head debut in a best-of-three sets matchup, with no reported injuries and typical Central Asian clay conditions favoring baseline grinders.
