Kalinina enters as the higher-ranked player at No. 69 compared to Sun’s No. 110, backed by a stronger 2026 win-loss record near 34-11 versus Sun’s roughly 7-14. No prior head-to-head exists between the pair. Sun arrives after a straight-sets grass loss at Ilkley and limited overall success this season, while Kalinina’s recent results feature clay-court consistency before a French Open exit, with minimal grass-court activity in the current year. The Berlin qualifying match on grass favors players who adapt quickly to the faster surface and serve effectiveness, where early breaks often prove decisive. Sun’s past grass results, including a Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance, provide some counterbalance to the ranking gap in this early-round setting.
