A federal grand jury in Alabama indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on April 21, 2026, on 11 counts of wire fraud, false statements to banks, and money laundering conspiracy, alleging misuse of over $3 million in donor funds to pay informants infiltrating extremist groups like the Ku Klux Klan from 2014 to 2023. Legal experts, including former DOJ prosecutors, deem the case thin, lacking key elements of intent for fraud charges, while SPLC filed motions on April 28 seeking grand jury materials and disputing Trump administration claims. Arraignment is set for May 7 with no trial scheduled, leading traders to price a 67% chance of no guilty verdict by December 31 amid procedural delays and evidentiary skepticism.
