OpenAI's GPT-5.5, released in late April 2026, has solidified its lead on the FrontierMath benchmark—a rigorous test of advanced mathematical reasoning featuring unpublished research-level problems across Tiers 1-4—with scores of 52% on Tiers 1-3 and 40% on the ultra-challenging Tier 4, up incrementally from GPT-5.4's 50% and 38%. This dominance stems from OpenAI's aggressive iteration on large language models, prioritizing math-specific scaling and chain-of-thought optimizations amid a competitive landscape where Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7 lags at 23% on Tier 4 and Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro at 17%. Traders should watch OpenAI's monthly release cadence for potential GPT-5.6 previews or API updates by June 30, though benchmark gains are slowing, signaling diminishing returns on current compute paradigms.
