In the Mutua Madrid Open qualifying first round on high-altitude clay, No. 103 Matteo Arnaldi faces No. 138 Dusan Lajovic in their first head-to-head matchup. Arnaldi arrives in dismal 2026 form (2-7 overall, 1-4 clay), highlighted by a first-round loss to Cristian Garin at Monte Carlo last week as a lucky loser, struggling with consistency on the surface. Lajovic, a 35-year-old one-handed backhand veteran, holds a steadier 10-11 overall and 6-8 clay record this year, bolstered by past Madrid success including a 2018 quarterfinal run, despite a recent Marrakech round-of-32 exit to Rafael Jodar. No injuries reported; warm conditions around 30°C could amplify the court's fast bounce, favoring aggressive baseline play.
