Rafael Jodar rides strong momentum into his third-round clash with No. 27 seed Joao Fonseca at the Mutua Madrid Open, having upset World No. 8 Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-1 in the second round for his first Top 10 win, following a gritty three-set victory over Jesper de Jong. The Spaniard, playing before a home crowd at high-altitude clay courts that reward his explosive groundstrokes, boasts a 10-1 clay record this season after winning Marrakech. Fonseca, the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals champion, advances via a first-round bye and second-round walkover against Marin Cilic (food poisoning), entering their maiden head-to-head rusty despite recent clay quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo and Munich. Both 19-year-old Top 100 teens share aggressive styles suited to Madrid conditions.
