Matteo Berrettini heads into his Madrid Open first-round clash with qualifier Raphael Collignon buoyed by a straight-sets upset over Daniil Medvedev in Monte Carlo last week, improving his 2026 clay record to 5-5 amid ongoing cramping concerns from Indian Wells. The No. 92-ranked Italian, a former top-10 player with strong clay pedigree including a Rome final, holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge from Davis Cup indoors last November. Meanwhile, No. 71-ranked Collignon rides a perfect 5-0 clay mark this year, highlighted by his Monza Challenger title on April 6, fueling his breakthrough season with upsets over Grigor Dimitrov. High-altitude Madrid clay favors their big serves, setting a competitive matchup between experience and surging form.
