In the first-round clash at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on clay, No. 57 Camilo Ugo Carabelli holds an edge over No. 82 Alexander Shevchenko with no prior head-to-head meetings. Carabelli, a baseline grinder thriving on slower surfaces, reached the Madrid Masters main draw last week before a third-round exit to seeded Flavio Cobolli, building on clay challenger success earlier in 2026. Shevchenko, meanwhile, has struggled on clay this season with early losses in Monte-Carlo (to Marin Cilic), Madrid (to Jaume Munar), and Aix-en-Provence (to Yibing Wu), posting a sub-.500 YTD record. Traders eye Carabelli's surface affinity and ranking momentum amid Rome's demanding conditions, though Shevchenko's flat-hitting could exploit any fatigue.
