Matteo Berrettini heads into his Valencia Challenger first-round clash with Taro Daniel as the clear trader consensus favorite on clay, buoyed by his world No. 100 ranking, 3-2 head-to-head edge, and powerful serve-forehand combination that has yielded 7-8 clay results in 2026, including Challenger wins over Coria, Barrios Vera, and Navone. The Italian, a former top-6 player, has rebuilt momentum after an injury-disrupted start with Australian Open withdrawal and early exits in Madrid/Rome, prioritizing physical reliability in best-of-three format. Daniel, ranked 335, carries qualifier sharpness from straight-set wins over Brancaccio and Sanchez Jover, plus a recent Morelos Challenger final, with his baseline absorption and rally extension posing upset threat on the slower surface if Berrettini’s first-serve percentage dips.
