Elena Rybakina enters as the higher-ranked contender at No. 2, fresh off her Stuttgart clay title last week where she defeated Karolina Muchova in the final, signaling strong early adaptation to the surface despite it not being her strongest. Anastasia Potapova, riding momentum with a gritty comeback over Jelena Ostapenko (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) in the third round and an earlier straight-sets win against Shuai Zhang, boasts a 7-2 clay record in 2026. Their head-to-head stands at 1-1, with Potapova's 2018 upset balanced by Rybakina's 2024 Brisbane victory. Madrid's high-altitude, faster clay favors Rybakina's powerful serve and groundstrokes, but Potapova's baseline resilience and recent upsets keep this round-of-16 clash competitive, with no reported injuries for either.
