Ann Li enters this Internazionali BNL d'Italia first-round clay-court clash with strong momentum from her recent European swing, highlighted by a Madrid Open Round of 16 run where she toppled top seed Iga Swiatek via third-set retirement before falling to Leylah Fernandez, plus a Rouen quarterfinal featuring wins over Daria Kasatkina and Kamilla Rakhimova. Ranked No. 29 to Shuai Zhang's No. 65, Li holds a perfect 2-0 head-to-head edge on hard courts, including a 2025 Guangzhou semifinal rout. Zhang, a 37-year-old veteran excelling in doubles (No. 10), has struggled on 2026 clay with four straight opening-round losses, underscoring Li's surface advantages amid typical Rome conditions at Foro Italico. Upsets remain possible in WTA 1000 openers given the veteran's experience.
