Polymarket traders assign a slim 16% implied probability to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—handling 12% of global trade and key for Europe-Asia oil flows—being effectively closed by May 31, per IMF PortWatch transit data, reflecting skepticism amid Houthi threats since early April 2026. Escalating US-Iran tensions, including Hormuz disruptions, prompted Houthi warnings of blockade in support of Tehran around April 19, yet transit volumes persist at 60% of pre-2023 levels for approved vessels, averting full shutdown. Rerouting via Africa's Cape adds 30-50% to freight rates and $800-1,500 per 40ft container in surcharges, fueling oil risk premiums and inflation pressures. Watch post-April 30 Houthi actions and US naval responses for sentiment shifts.
