In the Gwangju Challenger first round on outdoor hard courts, higher-ranked Yasutaka Uchiyama (No. 298) holds an edge over qualifier Yuta Shimizu (No. 390) via a 1-1 head-to-head split on hard—his latest win a 2024 Zhangjiagang R32 retirement—and stronger 2026 hard-court record (11-6 vs. Shimizu's 8-7), capped by a Yokkaichi Challenger final. Shimizu's momentum from qualifying shines, dropping no sets in straight-set wins over Jake Delaney and Taro Daniel (6-3, 6-2) with 8 aces and 85% first-serve points won against Daniel. Uchiyama arrives off a tight Busan R1 loss last week (6-3, 5-7, 7-6 to Sharipov). No injury concerns; expect a competitive baseline battle favoring Uchiyama's experience absent upsets.
